Dominance, 166 x 44 x 98 cm, Deconstructed Textile, 2019

To control my imperfection in following uniform rules and being “normal” in the standard of school context, this garment portrays destruction of those norms. I deconstructed elements of the uniform in a provocative manner to confront the ideology of a conservative school. I focused on arrangements and cuts of the materials to portray a sensibility of power that females have in men-dominated-culture. I fused styles of feminine and street in the silhouette to respond to rules that unequally restrict female students’ presentations. Being frustrated, there was continuous detaching, attaching, and reattaching.

Photographed with the dress in high school site, creating a dialogue between memories of these walls where growth happened and steps were taken as a student. It reminded of the process of figuring out oneself, finding a voice and strength.
